Yamaha is one of the most renowned Powersports manufacturers in the world today, but motors and gear were not always the company’s strong suit. Yamaha Corporation began as a manufacturer of pianos and reed organs.
The company continued to manufacture musical instruments until 1953, when the fourth generation president, Genichi Kawakami, decided to diversify into small engines and motorcycles. During the postwar period, many Japanese manufacturers began to convert their wartime production into new markets, such as motorcycles and automobiles.
The first Yamaha motorcycle, the YA-1, was released in 1955 by the company’s newly formed branch, Yamaha Motor Company. While many motorcycle manufacturers had early product failures, Yamaha found almost immediate success with the YA-1, which began placing in major national races. This racing heritage would continue to influence Yamaha’s product design throughout the company’s existence.
