What’s new in the latest model of Yamaha R15 V4

  • The R15’s fourth generation is jam-packed with features. It has a new front end with a new Bi-functional LED headlamp and LED DRLs on either side.
  • Yamaha R15 V4 gets the new windscreen above the lights and the gold-finished upside-down forks.
  • It also has a new digital instrument console based on the YZF-R1 and Yamaha’s Y-Connect app.
  • The display has modes (Street and Track), a lap timer, a gear position indicator, call/message alerts, mobile battery status, connection status, average fuel efficiency, and the last place you parked. You can also get information like the instantaneous fuel economy, the intake air temperature, the ECO indicator, how much the throttle is open, and how fast the car is going.
  • The R15 V4 Racing Blue, ‘M,’ and R15M World GP 60th Edition go one step further by including traction control and a quick shifter as standard features.

Design of Yamaha R15 V4

The new Yamaha YZF-R15 V4 looks even better in person, like a proper mid-size sportbike. It is due to its design drawing inspiration from the larger Yamaha YZF-R7. The face is aggressive and sharp, with new LED running lights flanking the bi-functional LED headlight in the centre.

The new windscreen above the lights is also unique, improving airflow and aerodynamics. The other visual difference is the gold-finished upside-down forks, which give the R15 V4 a premium appearance and a better front-end feel.

In addition to the standard tachometer, speedometer, and fuel gauge, the LCD instrument console is new. The bike offers many features, including read-outs for battery voltage, a trip meter, fuel efficiency, and a clock. The clip-on handlebars are also new and wider for better leverage while providing a committed and sporty riding position.

The rear panels are of a floating design, seating above the reinforced rear sub-frame, though the main delta box frame is the same as on the previous model. The bike gets LED taillight, but the indicators are not LED.

Overall, there’s little to criticise about the appearance of this entry-level sportbike, but better clutch and brake levers (with span adjustability) and LED turn indicators would have made it even better! However, upon closer inspection, the R15 V4 appears to be a proper sportbike, despite its relatively small engine.

Engine of the Yamaha R15 V4

Yamaha didn’t change the engine in the R15, and it still has the same 155cc, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled VVA engine. It still makes 18.1bhp @ 1000rpm, but its peak torque of 14.1Nm @ 7500rpm.

The engine still has a six-speed gearbox and the same slip-and-assist clutch, which makes the clutch lever light and easy to use.

The bike also comes with a quick shifter. It is an option for the standard colour schemes, but it comes with the R15M and MotoGP editions as a standard option.

The quick shifter is not just there for show. It works above 2000rpm and 20km/h, and shifting is pretty smooth at higher revs. But the shifts are a little clunky if you do them when the tacho needle is near the bottom of its range.

Features of Yamaha R15 V4

At the front, the V4.0 has a nice-looking cockpit, and the new R15 has a nice LCD instrument cluster with Yamaha-Connect. The app is available for both iOS and Android. This app lets you connect your Yamaha R15 V4 to your phone via Bluetooth and lets you get phone, SMS, and email alerts.

The app has more information, such as where the bike was last parked, how much gas it used, its health history, and much more. The bike also has a special “ Track ” mode that shows your current and best lap time on a racetrack.

Interestingly, the buttons to switch between Street and Track mode and look at different information on the MID are on the right handlebar instead of near the cluster.

It also has USD forks, which the V3 didn’t have. Because of this, the bike is quick to turn and stays put when you lean over. The USD forks will make the bike more stable, especially on a racetrack, in turn, or when stopping hard. Disc brakes with dual-channel ABS work well and make you feel safe, but it kicks in a little sooner than you’d like.

The Yamaha R15 V4 has a 6-speed solid gearbox. The transmission on the R15 V4 is butter smooth throughout the six gears.

The R15 V4 uses an upside-down front suspension fork with 37 mm inner tubes to take the sporty handling on twisty roads to the next level. The upside-down front forks keep the bike more rigid and stable when turning at high speeds or when braking hard.

The R15 V4 has a 282mm front disc brake and a 220mm rear disc brake with Anti-lock Braking System (ABS). It means that even when the bike is going fast, you can stop it precisely, and the wheels won’t lock up.
